Show not tell

Teaching students how to use show not tell in their writing was very interesting.  My students were fascinated by the fact that actually, if they used showing sentences, the readers will have better understanding with great interest when reading their stories.   Moreover, they noticed that the quantity of their writing will be bigger, yet with good quality sentences. I understood that it might take a while for most of my students to get the hang of it but I will make sure that I will constantly remind them before they begin any writing task.

Show not tell

Telling Sentence
Showing Sentence
I was happy.
I skipped all the way home,  humming songs in my head.
The classroom was a mess.
Books, papers and tools were everywhere across the classroom making the classroom look like a pigsty.
We lost, I was sad.
I walked slowly along.  My head down, my hands in my pockets, dragging my feet along the ground.
I was sad.
My heart felt heavy.  I tried not to cry.
I was really scared.
I thought every sound was coming closer and closer.  I was so jumpy that when my phone rang I nearly fell out of my chair.
She was angry.
She kicked the door as she stomped out of the room.

  1. Hevaha I really like sound of this lesson. I will need to find out more from you about it. I kept on clicking on your underlining though, thinking it was a link.
